Thank you Yelp! I wouldn't have found this without you. There is a lot of bad, reasonably priced food in Saint Augustine, along with a little good, overpriced food. Back 40 Urban Cafe offers good food at a great price, with a chill, down-home atmosphere to boot. I had the Jerk Chicken Island Bowl. $9. That's it! And it was good. Fresh ingredients, good flavor, and reasonably healthy. Also, they have a decent bottled beer selection for a small restaurant. Consider this review not just a 4, but a 4+.

Just left here with a very happy, full belly! The Shrimp Curry Salad was perfectly delicious and I will probably never taste anything else on their menu because I will definitely order it every time I return...and I will return! The dressing (coconut-curry buttermilk) was a remarkable mixture of favors that took it to a new level of deliciousness, a must try!

I loved this place it's a hole in the wall and has great food! We loved the black bean hummus and I enjoyed my wet burrito! The burrito was huge and saved it for leftovers! A very affordable restaurant with great food!

This place is great. A little hard to find but with Yelp it not hard to get here. Wife had their burger (made with their meatloaf mix). Was excellent but had a little kick to it from their spice mix. I had a lunch special sandwich pastrami & corn beef on rye. Very good food.

We stopped here on our drive north to Connecticut. Worth the trip off the highway (about 7 miles from i95). We both had the curry chicken wrap and it was awesome!

My favorite restaurant in St Augustine! Very friendly stuff and great food. I love their shrimp salad with coconut curry dressing and pineapple quesadilla. Huge portion and reasonable price.

Eclectic place. I have been here twice and have tried their giant burrito. The chicken was not shredded which I feel would have been a better option vs large chunks. I'd go back to try more of the menu.

Delicious food, cute cozy atmosphere!!! Our group visited this place after finding good reviews via Yelp! We were treated well, our waitress was knowledgable about the local beers and the food was fantastic! Our party sat outside and our waitress was quick to find us an indoor table when we encountered a pop-up Florida shower. The restaurant was in a cute little house and was divided into small dining rooms. I highly recommend the Island Bowl or Wet Burrito! Enjoy your visit!

Food was great as was the service! I had the wet burrito with Jerk chicken. It was so big we split it! My daughter had the Maui wrap and we shared that also. We both liked the burrito better! We will come back for sure.

This is one of those instances where if yelp didn't exist, there is no way I would have even found this place. It looks like someone bought an old house and converted into this hip, wonderful place. The art on the walls is great, and for sale. The place is clean, the service great, and the menu selections inviting. They also had good beers with quirky cans from Jacksonville. The food is simple but delicious. Not very expensive either. The portions were pretty big. A note of caution if you're thinking of ordering a salad - it looks like the biggest main dish they have. I had the island bowl which was quite hearty. I couldn't move after I had finished it. Even though we were full, it seemed that other people were ordering dessert and enjoying it. I would recommend this place to anyone passing through or visiting St. Augustine!

It's hard to judge a place from one sitting, but for the first try I give it a four. The menu is great with awesome prices. I got the teriyaki bowl, and I loved it. The staff was friendly. I really enjoyed the look of the place!

What a great place to visit on a lazy Sunday! It is a relaxing and laid back hole in the wall that is worth discovering. The food is delicious and prices are very reasonable. Try the Curry Chicken Wrap or the Hummus from appetizer section.. Portions are so huge, I have leftover for another meal. We will definitely come here again.

Straight forward vegan food livened up with local hot sauce. A nice side salad, vegan dressing, what appear to be housemade pickles, local brews. My non vegan dining companion had a great mud pie with brownie, coffee ice cream, chocolate sauce and lots of walnuts. Check = $32.00. Good deal, good food, good service. I'll come back.

I've had mojo pork at dozens of places, but this by far was the best in the history of ever. It's not on the menu though, only served as a special occasionally.

I love going to St. Augustine, but never tried this place and let tell you that has been a big mistake. I love how its setup in a old house, I think we actually ate in what once was a bedroom, I thought it was cool. The staff was great, took their time explaining everything to us. the waitress told me about one of the favorites, the legendary wet burrito, then she told me I could have it made my way, that they were made to order and the portion was more than enough. I took her word for it and when I finally saw it, i actually felt a tear forming as I rejoiced in the beauty that was presented to me. My partner ordered, Chicken teriyaki which I also found to very beautiful in presentation, but then we had to go in for taste and to my surprise the taste didn't disappoint. I did not have room for dessert, but between four people we did take down some coffee ice cream with a very hot and tasty brownie. This place is a truly hidden gem, if you blink you will drive by it, it is off the beaten path, but as in many places, when the food is good, the drive is worth it. The next time you go into St, Augustine dont let this gem of a place go without a visit.

St. Augustine is a foodie town in my opinion, however, the best places are those located outside of the tourist downtown district. On a recent trip, we sought out this quaint little cafe known to be vegetarian friendly called The Back 40 Urban Cafe. This place is hidden on a remote street behind U.S. Rt 1- a very popular and busy thoroughfare through town. If you blink, you may miss the street and the cafe. However, it is worth the find. The Back 40 Urban Cafe looks like somebody's house and as we walked in I was convinced that it probably was at some point. Three separate dining rooms with about six tables in each make it cozy and inviting. We chose a booth in the front room facing out into the front yard. I truly felt like I was in someone's house and couldn't wait for some home Tex Mex cooking. The menu is quite eclectic featuring tacos, salads, quesadillas and vegetarian chili. We started with the black bean hummus which was served with toasted pita bread, carrots and celery. It was very good- just like something I would make at home. Hummus has become a comfort food for us and we really liked this. It was creamy, tangy and just a little bit spicy. I was excited for what was next. We saw a lady at another table that had the world's largest burrito sitting in front of her. Turns out it was their popular Wet Burrito which we also ended up ordering. This thing was STUFFED with black beans, brown rice, roasted red peppers, cheese, jalapenos, tomatoes and lettuce and topped with red chili sauce. (For an additional charge you can add chicken, shrimp or mahi mahi) The jalapenos made it spicy, the beans and rice made it filling and the red chili sauce made it terrific. Yes, I just described food as "terrific". It was. The wet burrito was so large that not even two of us could finish it. For the $7 price, this was a great value that would stretch over two full meals. We also ordered the avocado and roasted red pepper tacos with a side of black beans and rice. (Yes black beans were the main staple of our entire meal) While they sound rather boring, there was nothing boring about it. There was nothing skimpy about these tacos. They too were stuffed with plenty of avocado, red peppers, cheese and fresh cilantro. Also topped with a cilantro white sauce this isn't for the cilantro-ey challenged folk. And for $8 this too was quite filling. After we ate I took a quick stroll around the restaurant to admire all the art hanging on the walls (which is all available for purchase and I am assuming it was all done by a local artist- I should have asked about it.) Overall, this was a great place. A couple had walked in shortly after us and struck up a conversation. They were locals and loved this place. The gentleman told us this is his go-to spot for business lunches and I get it. Large portions and low price. I can see why The Black 40 Urban Cafe has a loyal following. This is surely a place we will visit again. 4 1/2 out of 5 sprouts.

We love this place. It's quaint and cozy with a menu full of comfort food. I had the chili Mac and I can't see ordering anything else ever. Lynn had the upside down chicken pot pie and loved it. Robbie had the wet burrito and was okay with it. He ft it was good, but was really a taco salad in a burrito wrap. He tried Lynn's pot pie and plans on getting that next time instead.

My husband and I decided to give this place a try after reading some of the reviews on here. I ordered the avocado tacos and they were great! The restaurant is in an old house and the seating is scattered throughout rooms and the back patio. The waitress was really friendly and our food came out quickly. They have an OK beer selection. The restaurant location isn't really in the nicest of areas. Driving down the road, it seems a little out of place and sneaks up on you from out of nowhere. This doesn't seem like a place many tourists would venture to find.

  • Stella M.

Service was a little slow, but the food was great. We ordered jerk chicken quesadillas with pineapple salsa and the jerk chicken press. Yummy meals and fair prices. It's away from all of the heavy traffic in downtown st Augustine, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your preference.

Super cute hidden gem in St.Augustine. This place is away from all of the touristy restaurants with overpriced bad food! This restaurant is a charming historic house turned restaurant with 3 dining rooms for patrons to sit in. The waitresses are super friendly, attentive and offered great suggestions for their favorite items on menu. We came in during happy hour so it was hello $2 -$3 tacos! We ordered the black bean nachos and shrimp quesadillas for an appetizer, which were both absolutely delicious! I ordered the Mahi Mahi (highly recommended!), shrimp and jerk chicken tacos and it was pretty good. Not the best Mexican food ever but it was well seasoned and the presentation of each plate was clean and pretty. Back 40 Urban is a great spot for eating after being at the beach all day!

  • Joe W.

This place is great! If you're looking for something a little different, this is your place. The wet burrito is off the chain! The price is great and the staff is always helpful. Do yourself a favor and go the extra mile for The Back 40!

Delicious! Ordered the curry chicken wrap but added jerk chicken and chips and salsa. Fresh and lots of flavor

  • Kim C.

A friend recommended this "off the beaten path" restaurant, and I'm so happy I tried it! I took my Mom here after a day on the beach, and we both loved our food. She had the upside down chicken pot pie and her only "complaint" was there was too much chicken:) I tasted it, and it had a great flavor. I chose the Cajun shrimp quesadilla and the shrimp tasted like they had just caught it; it was very fresh and spiced/cooked perfectly. The homemade salsa was so good that I wanted to drink it! I'm adding this hidden gem to my "will be back" list!

You know what makes this place great. You order a high alcohol.content beer and they bring you the whole beer. Not some brandy glass with a dallop of beer in it. I ordered a high gravity beer knowing full well that I was paying too much for it (the place is great not heaven) and they brought me a whole bottle of beer. I was blown away. The food was excellent and all priced around $10. I had the jerk of chicken bowl with avacodo and instead some tiny avacodo slice you get half a damn avacado. Half a damn avacado people! It is small so be prepared to wait.

Met friends here last night ( who had never been )and we all loved our selections. I had the chili Mac with a side salad and everything was fresh and delicious. The shrimp tacos were enjoyed by their son and his dad wolfed down the huge wet burrito. The beer drinkers of the group heartily enjoyed the wide range of beers available and their house Malbec is delicious. This was not my first time here but it was the first time I ordered dessert. OMG the Apple pie cheesecake was out of this world. I sent it around the table and the plate came back clean. If you're looking for something fancy, keep driving. But if you want some simple, well prepared delicious food with a tex mex flavor, do yourself a favor and pull in!!

The food and our server were great - 4 stars. Another server who helped was having an off day (2 to 3 stars)and cursed near us. The raspberry tea was a nice touch. I am iffy about coming back here again though.

We went here for dinner in December 2013. Can't remember much (it's 1/20/14 today) other than the food was good, it was hard to find, the lighting for the parking lot was poor and the service was good. But we'll go back.

This is a hidden gem. Perfect for a casual lunch and delicious food. They use lots of fresh, local ingredients that makes for great flavor. They also have a good selection of interest beers.

Wow, worth it!! A complete goldmine of taste and down home style. Yes , it off the beaten path a small bit but your effort will be rewarded 10 fold. A new favorite in an already full town of outstanding food.

Really tasty and clean food. Third time there. The owners daughter is just fabulous and a delight to have as your waitress...she rocks as does her dads food! One of the best places in St Augustine, not to be missed!

The Friday before Memorial Day weekend, Adam got his wisdom teeth taken out. All 4 of 'em. 3 were impacted. We spent all of Friday relaxing on the couch while he enjoyed his meds and drooled in his pudding. The next day, he bounded out of bed looking for something to conquer after being cooped up for an entire day. There's really no other way to describe his desires to get.out.of.the.house .asap. He was like a new man... he just couldn't drink from a straw. I'd been dying to check out a restaurant in St. Augustine so we jumped in the car and headed that direction. On the way down, he pulled up their menu and realized he couldn't actually eat anything on their menu. He's not a picky eater, but the problem with wisdom teeth, or the lack of wisdom teeth, is chewing is a b#@$%. Dang it. So since we were almost to St. Augustine, I told him just to pick some place and QUICK. Oy. What WAS I thinking? He found a place scary quick using Urbanspoon. It was called Back 40 Urban Cafe. Uh.. what? Me: "Honey.. babe.. maybe it's your meds.. you want to go to an Urban Cafe"? Him: "100% of the people like it on UrbanSpoon" Me: "So... the owner, his wife, his girlfriend, and his relatives all clicked 'like'. Big woop" Him: "Uh.. so he has 280 relatives because that's how many reviews they have, and it's still at 100%" Me: [internal voice] Crap... we're really going to have to go to this place... So we navigated away from downtown and even farther away from the beach which was where I wanted to go..[major pouting going on here while I drive]. We turn down some side street into houses and drive past this. Yes, we drove past because I was panicking. "That's where you want to go??? What? That little shack??" (Ok seriously, I was being a butthead, because it's totally cute in the picture.. but let's continue...) Adam stuck to his guns (as he SHOULD). I swung the car around, and we headed back to the "urban cafe". (From the other direction it seemed more inviting. Maybe it was the big parking lot on the one side..) I pulled around back. Gave myself a mental pep talk, turned off the car, stepped out...and was surprised.. it actually looked...cute? I may have been swayed by the cute menu board stating $2 tacos and Coronas.. Then we walked inside. Immediately I saw the cutest 3 chair bar. It instantly reminded me of a cute restaurant/bar in a house I used to enjoy back when I lived in Indianapolis for that hot second. (It kills me I cannot remember the name of this place!) Such a cozy feel. I could see Adam and me and maybe a friend just relaxing there. We took a quick scan of a few of the rooms and picked the middle one because it was empty. All the rooms are different colors with different paintings on the walls. This is the part when my day got flipped-turned upside down and all delicious. $2 Corona? Yes, please. We scanned the menu. They were offering a specialty menu for the holiday which meant I couldn't try the Pineapple Jerk Chicken Quesadilla Adam had read from Yelp & Urbanspon. Aww shucks. We have to come back again? Twist my arm. Then the delicioiusness happened. Adam having not really eaten anything but mashed potatoes, smoothies-in-a-bowl, and mac n cheese for the past day of COURSE ordered the Wet Burrito. It seriously was huge. I went with the Island Bowl which was avocado (you can also get jerk chicken) over a bowl of black beans and brown rice with shredded cheese and tomatoes topped with a dollop of sour cream, green onions, cilantro and jalapenos served with a side of fresh house salsa. It was like all my favorite things all in one. We were starving when we showed up and The Back 40 Urban Cafe did not disappoint. True, I had to get over my fears of going somewhere "off the beaten path," but I survived, left stuffed, AND found a cute little place we'll definitely visit again and again.. especially so we can try the Jerk Chicken Quesadillas!

Very nice off the beaten path restaurant. Located in an old house. Had the cheese burger which was really more of a meatloaf sandwich. Nice hint of pepper on a grilled panini. Wedge salad was huge as well as the burrito we saw the table next to us order. Good craft beer selection had a pale ale named naked pig from Alabama that was quite good. Only complaint service was a bit slow and it was at an off hour so no excuses on that aspect. This brought what would have been a 5 star rating down to a 4. Give it a try should be much better than anything you might find need the tourist traps downtown. Will give them another try as the food was exceptional.

  • Mike B.

This restaurant was pretty good. The food was good and value excellent. It's located in what used to be an old home. We ate in the living room...just felt a bit odd. Overall, I'd recommend this place.

Had the pleasue of eating at Back40 twice on the trip to St. Augustine. Both times where for lunch. The staff was attentive and the food was delicous.

  • Lisa M.

Yummy in every way! Back 40 is located in a renovated house in an industrial neighborhood so when you pull up you might be dubious about where you are going. DONT BE! This restaurant is as charming as it is tasty. The staff is very attentive to the constant flow of seat-yourself patrons. The menu is innovative and delicious. Our food came relatively quickly and it was hot and as-described on the menu. Most entrees are between $7 and $14 so eating there is easy on the budget. This is a perfect example of the stereotypical dive serving up a perfect portion of local flavor and excellent food! Don't miss it!

When in St. Augustine I always have this place on the proverbial bucket list. I get the same thing every time so unfortunately you wont get an immersive review of their entire catalog. The fish tacos, however, you can rest assured are phenomenal. A little Cholula or Sriracha hot sauce, a cold beer and a napkin to wipe your brow is all you need. The atmosphere and local art displayed on the wall makes for great conversation (if you aren't stuffing your mouth full of course) and the waitstaff and owners are good peoples.

This place looks a lil odd but the food is great! I really enjoyed the Salsa they make in house.

  • Lauren H.

Well the wait for food was quite some time but omg was it worth it. Everything was outstanding. Service - Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I think the owner (?) even came out and asked us how everything was and if we needed anything. Atmosphere - It's a house that is now a restaurant. There's a lot of really cool art on the walls and each room is a little different. Food - Delicious, fresh, good sized portions, and reasonably priced. The beer selection is pretty good too! I had a Golden Monkey. It's a Belgium style ale with 9.5% alcohol. WIN!

  • Jim C.

To our surprise this restaurant is off the beat and path but well worth the extra effort to be rewarded with both great food and excellent service. Parking is some what limited just like the rest of St. Augustine. The hamburger I ordered was not like any I had ever seen but very delicious. If your the standard hamburger and fries person the hamburger does not come with fries but a list of other options. My wife had the Island bowl and thought the rice and black beans didn't sound that great until she got it. That was two of the main ingredients among other items including jerk chicken. This was a St. Augustine menu of favorite dishes and liking to the area. If you like to try new ideas and cultures the Back 40 is a great place to start. One hint try the desserts you won't believe!!!! Wish we had one of these back in Indiana!!!!

Consistently good food here, last time had the shrimp tacos, which were excellent. Met Brad the owner the other night by chance and he seems like a cool guy as well. Only downside was service outside on a Saturday lunchtime was a but sluggish, but overall this is well worth it.

  • Susan G.

Located away from the crowds in a residential/industrial neighborhood. But it was still busy! Service was friendly and quick. Blackened Shrimp Quesadillas were very good. Lots of fillings. Shrimp Tacos were tasty and the salsa was fresh. Note: they're closed from April 9 - 20, 2014 to remodel.

Quite wonderful. BIG flavors. Homemade sauces. I had the tacos and my wife had jerk chicken and wonderful salad. DO not be turned away by the modest exterior. This place is worth going at least an hour out of the way!

Really really delicious, and cheap! We got the jerk chicken quesadillas with pineapple and the shrimp with polenta/grits cake special. So yummy ! Some other people were scarfing up this soup with hominy in it that I wanted to try, maybe next time. Yeah, its in kind of an old house that has been remodeled and we sat by a window that had peeling paint, but Ive eaten at worse places :). The food, price, and service will make us repeat customers.

Don't be deceived by the looks. It looks like an old run down residential home, which is pretty much what it is. But the food is creative, fresh and tasty. Parking can be troublesome at lunch time, but it's bigger than it looks inside and there is usually always a table open.

    (4)
  • Erika J.

OMG! I don't write reviews but I had to for this place! It's tucked away from the beach and downtown area, so not a lot of tourists. The pineapple & jerk chicken quesadilla and chicken curry wrap are to die for! The portions are big; the appetizer is dinner size and the prices are very reasonable. If you are every in St Augustine this is a must eat place!

Just had a wonderful family dinner at the Back 40! We found this place through Yelp, and we were not lead astray. This cute urban cafe is off the beaten path, but well worth the mini adventure to find it. A short drive from the main tourist area, it is located in an area you could mistake for quiet neighborhood. This restaurant is located in a house and maintains the charm of eating in someone's house. The staff was very friendly, the food was amazing. Lots of great flavor and good sized portions. Next time I am in St. Augustine I will be back!

  • Lynn B.

Huge portions, but big doesn't make good unfortunately. I ordered chips and salsa (the kind that are usually free were $4, but things are tight everywhere, so okay) while I waited and should have taken the hint. This tiny bowl of salsa was tasty, but the thick, cheap obviously bagged chips were gross. I ordered the Chicken pot pie on puff pastry and was served a heaping gelatinous goo filled with canned mixed veggies, the kind I wouldn't even serve to the kids. It was flavored with old sage that every now and then tasted like dirt. The atmosphere was charming and I ate on the patio so I could sit with my dogs. They enjoyed the pot pie. Recommendation to the cook: make your sauce with flour not cornstarch, lose the canned veggies and substitute them with mushrooms sauteed in sherry/ Madeira and add a pinch of parmesan. My friend had the Wet Burrito, which after reading rave reviews she expected better ( more meat and sauce would've been good on this 10x5x6 inch concoction). The prices were good, the service was also good, though I don't see myself returning.

Amazing food. Great service. Friendly staff. Good atmosphere. This is by fat my favorite restaurant in St. Augustine. I eat here multiple times per week and often introduce coworkers to this place and they are always impressed.

Took a risk and tried the restaurant based on the reviews and we had a great dinner. My husband wanted to find another place to eat when we drove up - you can't judge a book by its cover. We had a delicious meal and the service was very good.

  • Dawn P.

Great food! She loves curry chicken and he loves jerk chicken. Hip atmosphere and decor. Unfortunately, I have to give less stars due to bad business practice. The owner told us himself that starting in January, they would be offering $2 tacos for Taco Tuesday. Went back in February on a Tuesday and was told he never started the promo. It's bad business to tell customers (especially new ones) about promos you are not ready to commit to and worse to not honor it for 2 customers that are local and potential frequent guests. Sorry, but we will probably never go back and I want to!

This is our first visit and we left planning to come back. I ordered the Cuban sandwich with coleslaw and hubby ordered the special steak and avocado wet burrito. The waitress said they have the best Cuban sandwich. I have to say it is amongst the best I've had (and I've tried many). Wasn't a fan of the coleslaw but then again, I like mayo in my slaw dressing and I like a finer shred of cabbage. I also ordered soup of the day which was a roasted cauliflower curry soup. It was very tasty. The burrito that hubby had was huge! You need a big appetite to eat the whole thing in one sitting. He said it had great flavor but it could have been hotter temperature wise. The restaurant does not look like much from the outside but is nice inside. It is an old house so there are several rooms where diners can sit. There is even an outdoor seating area in the back of the restaurant. Can't wait to try sitting out there.

We ate dinner here last night and liked it so much we came back for lunch today. For dinner there were 3 of us. Two of us shared the curry wrap. It was so good. Lots of chicken and lots of cashews with yummy sauce. It came with a side of chips and salsa. We loved the salsa. My husband had the wet burrito and only ate half of it, it was huge For lunch there were 4 adults and 2 children. We had the Thai peanut salad, which was yummy, the upside down chicken pot pie, also really good. We also had tacos, a classic reuben, and a kids quesadillo. All came with a choice of sides and we loved everything we tried.

Very cool place. We had mahi taco's and wet burrito. Burrito was huge. Enough for two. Housed in an old wood frame house off the beaten path. Great service and friendly customers.

Best food I have had in a LONG time. I am confident the rest of my family agrees. The jerk chicken nachos were an amazing appetizer. I then split a wet burrito with my wife and it was the best burrito either of us had ever had. I had some fish tacos as well, and they were perfect. My dad had the upside down chicken pot pie and he was very happy with it. I would highly recommend this place to anyone within a hours drive... It's that good!

I like the Back 40 but I don't love it and I like the ambiance more than I like the food. I will definitely go again. It's cozy and they have some vegetarian options. Everything is fresh and is real food. You feel good about eating there.

Great place, I can't wait to go again. The cafe is in a cute Victorian-type house decorated with an eclectic mix of art work, some of which is for sale. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. The food is really good and geared towards healthy and adventurous eaters. Both my meat & potatoes boyfriend and totally adventurous me were delighted with our meals.

Excellent service, delicious food. Go early for happy hour - 2.00 tacos and Corona. Really, you can't go wrong with any of their dishes

Nice dinner last night. We had dogs with us, so we ate outside. Two at our table enjoyed Urban 40 Burgers, one had the largest wet burrito I've ever seen and one ordered veggie tacos with avocado. Both said their meals were very good! Everyone was too full for dessert so we will have to go back! Service was great! Looking forward to our next visit!

Walking into this place was a little bewildering. It's a renovated house with three entrances, but none of them really feels like the 'front' or the 'right one' ..as soon as we were inside, i got the weirdest feeling that we had walked through the wall like a ghost- or Shadowcat- and were suddenly standing there, looming over some diners' table.. but just wait a beat and someone will escort you past walls of interesting local art to a table of your own. At my friend's recommendation, i had the avocado and red pepper tacos. I asked for no cheese or sour cream and the server promptly picked up what i was putting down and said, "vegan avocado tacos, got it." I appreciate this every time i go somewhere new and this happens. The food came out quickly and we ate it quickly. Everything was pretty dang good. And the prices are totally fair for the quantity and quality of the food.

GO HERE !! Seriously , just go . Home made salsa was on point . The staff was super friendly and helpful . It's in an old house in a nice little neighborhood . All around great food and atmosphere . We will be returning soon !

So good. I took my parents and they both ordered the upside down chicken pot pie. My wife had the avocado taco and I had the Mahi Mahi taco. Simple dinning that was great. Very fair prices. Don't hesitate go here.

This place came highly recommended and was very deserving of its rating. High quality ingredients and gigantic portions make this place special. I had the wet burrito and a side salad. The side salad was more massive than some entree salads I have ordered. Simple but well done it was a great start...then came the wet burrito. Gigantic isn't a proper word...seemingly a foot long or longer and 6 inches tall brimming with delicious rice, beans, peppers and tomatoes. I added grilled chicken for an up charge of $2. The restaurant is a great place if you're in the mood for some quality tex-mex style food. The only knocks I have on this place really don't have to do with food at all. The parking lot is terrible, even if you can get in...getting out seems to be the real chore...and the restaurant is in a repurposed house so the seating is not idea and dining areas feel pretty cramped. Overall a very good place...certainly above anyone's average standard.

Tasty food, Great portions, reasonable prices and quick service. Everyone is friendly and seating wait was 5 minutes tops. Wet Burrito, Meatloaf burger, and Thai chicken salad were our favorite.

I had a very good experience here. It's definitely different, being a renovated house that is easy to miss. I have driven past it many times and never noticed it. The decor is just okay...not sure if they are going for that "rustic" look...many cracks in the wall, and could certainly use a fresh coat of paint. We ended up getting seated in the second "room", where there were 4 tables. I loved it, it was like we had our own private dinner! Black bean hummus was DELICIOUS. Fresh, warm pitas for dipping were a welcome surprise from the usual bagged tortilla chips many restaraunts serve. I ordered the upside down pot pie and the puff pastry was delightfully light and crispy. Perfect for my comfort food craving. My boyfriend ordered the wet burrito which was the length of his forearm...awesome. Very very generous portion size for a great price too. Like others have said, save room for dessert. That night their cheesecake was blueberry pie. Best I've ever had. Hands down. If you go just for the cheesecake it's completely worth it! Staff was very friendly as well. We will definitely be back here!

Probably going to be my new favorite place to eat in St. Augustine. The portions are huge, and extremely tasty! I had the Wet Burrito with Jerked chicken which was a small mountain and chocked full of beans, rice, chicken, etc. it tasted so good I couldn't stop eating. The wife had the Thai salad and it was as tall as she is, she says the house dressing was so delicious she asked for some to take home! Just can't say enough good things about this place, from the food to the staff, and the prices. Both of those meals were less than $10 each. Take the time to find this little gem, it is well worth every minute!

I've never been to the restaurant. But thanks to Munchi's Express I have had many of the items on their menu. My favorite is the wet Burrito with either shrimp or chicken. My wife's favorite is the curry shrimp salad. Either of these comes highly recommended.

Loved it! Delicious vegan butternut squash soup as a special and a wet burrito with mahi mahi. Absolutely delicious and a very pleasant staff. Only complaint was that they prepared a child's meal with blackened spice instead of grilled which has to be returned to the kitchen.

Restaurant hidden in a neighborhood. It's like eating in your neighbor's house. It's cozy and calm. Got the caesar salad. It was huge. Very tasty. Art on the walls. Will come back.

We were looking for another restaurant when a reviewer said this place was the way to go. We looked at the website and the menu and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed. It's an older house converted into a restaurant. Walk in seat yourself, small place, a few tables in each room. Cool local art on the walls, fairly good beer and wine selection for a small establishment. The food was awesome. We had the Black bean hummus, the wet burrito-HUGE, my wife had some salad that she ate half of-took the rest home-too big, my seven year old had the quesadillas and was actually happy- we were happy that they weren't chicken fingers. Definitely recommend, off the beaten path, prices are reasonable, $50 with tip for 4 people- no alcohol.

This place was such a find while on vacation. Suuuuper tasty. We came during happy hour and got really great priced mahi tacos and avocado & red pepper tacos for cheap. We also had their chili (vegatarian), which was really good. The hot sauce they have there, San Augustin, was absolutely gorgeous. The servers were friendly and helpful. We couldn't help but go back again the next day and got the same thing! Many other things on the menu looked good though. Highly recommended. It is small though, so go off peak hours if you can.

4 good beers, good food everything less than $12. Fresh jalapeño instead of canned would have gotten the extra star. Good service, an off the beaten path local favorite.

Cool place. Kind of hidden off the road. Food was good. Gave it a 4 star because one person out of our group didn't like it. But I thought it was great.

Bottom line - well worth the time to find. I will admit, I was pretty nervous once we finally found this spot. I am pretty adventurous, but Back 40 is literally a house in the middle of a neighborhood. Luckily the food and staff made the trip to this little gem more than worth it. The service was friendly and attentive. Our server explained everything to us and answered all questions. I feel like I shouldn't have to mention things like that, but certain places have failed to deliver on the service end so I have to. The food was delicious. We shared the wet burrito and when they tell you it is as big as a small loaf of bread they are not kidding. More than enough food for even the biggest of eaters. Overall, while it may take a few minutes to find, Back 40 is more than worth the effort to locate.

Off the beaten path but worth the search. Delicious fresh food. Generous portions. Great service. Cold beer. Taco happy hour where the tacos are half priced. Tostada Tuesday. Loved it! Can't wait to go back!

We tried the place due to the reviews. Walking in, I knew the food must be good: the place looks like someone's house, modest decor, yet many hungry people enjoying plates that seemed to leave the kitchen fuller than they should. We started with the black bean hummus, the perfect combination of garlic, creaminess, and warm bread chips. My hubby had the cajun mahi tacos and I had the wet burrito with jerk chicken. Yummmm! Yes, the food is as good as everyone says. Unexpected flavors made me say "wow" at various times during dinner! Great prices for generous servings. Service is great. This place is a must try!

As a new local, I was introduced to this gem by my boyfriend and it is on the top of the list of favorites for us. Tucked away in a non-touristy area of saint Augustine, it is easily accessible--but disguised by its residential looking location. They have multiple dining rooms through the house, each wall decorated with local art. Their menu is mainly tropical/southwestern/Caribbean/tex-mex. Recommendations- black bean hummus, wet burrito with jerk chicken, pasta salad, classic or California Reuben, chicken curry wrap, and Santa Fe chicken salad. Their portions are huge for the prices (I always end up asking for a box), the flavored are spot on, and the service is attentive and accommodating. Be sure to ask about daily lunch/dinner/& dessert specials! Would recommend this place to anyone for a great lunch or cheap dinner! Give it a try!

Ok, now this was a cool eatery in the back neighborhoods of St. Augustine along the RR tracks. I felt like we were in a scene from A Time To Kill with Matthew McConaughey & Sandra Bullock driving down a dark road in an unfamiliar neighborhood and then voila! There it was this tiny little white house (I think it was white but not sure as it was soooo dark) that looked like it came straight out of the movie. We sat in one of the bedrooms to eat with another family & were pleasantly surprised with the delicious menu choices. If we ever go back to St. Augustine, we'd definitely go back for more.

We happened to be in St Augustine and couldn't find a restaurant in the historic district that wasn't packed due to their 450th birthday celebration. We used Yelp to find this great little restaurant and we were so pleased with their food, service and prices. Awesome place to get a delicious burrito and try their jerk chicken and pineapple quesadillas!! Highly recommended!!

Certainly is a bit off the beaten path, but not hard to find or get to...and if you are tourist in St Augustine...go here. It is worth the drive. Specially for those looking for vegan or vegetarian options. We were there waiting for the place to open at 11:00am. Service was spot on. Cute place. Lots of quirky charm. I ordered the black bean hummus. It was good and well presented. I liked the dusting of spices on the pita bread and the cut carrots and celery added a nice cool crunchy contrast. Now is it better than regular hummus? I don't think so, but I liked it was different and I did enjoy it. The kids ordered the Cubans and indeed, these may be some of the best cuban sandwiches around. Black beans and rice on the side were good. I think the chips and salsa on the side not as much, as a side. I ordered the red pepper and avocado tacos. Wife ordered the wet burrito with avocado, no sour cream. I forgot to mention the vegan option on the tacos, but there was very little shredded cheese in it, so that was good. The tacos were amazing. A little bland but add some spice with the salsa or sauce and it was perfect. The burrito I thought not quite as good, but will certainly appeal to those who value size or bang for your buck...or those very hungry. :) Great place. I wish it was closer so I could try some of the other dishes.

Absolutely amazing! I was very impressed. I've never had Caribean food mixed with Mexican food, but these folks make it work. I've had their massively huge burrito- which was awesome! And I've had their various happy hour tacos which were also amazing! Not only do I recommend this restaurant to a friend, I take friends and family to this place whenever people come to visit from out of town.

I love this place! Had the jerk quesadillas and was in love!!! The place is cozy but seats a surprising number of people. Total local hang out. Had the chicken Caesar wrap and it was so good. The flavors great and the sauces are great but they do not overwhelm the freshness of the food. This is my new favorite place for a quick work lunch.

We really enjoyed our meal here! The shrimp curry salad and the (vegetarian) chili mac were fantastic. Service was laid back (translation: a little on the slow side, so please chill out and be patient! it's worth it!) and super friendly, the vibe is casual and even intimate, with a handful of tables in each room rather than everyone in one big room. Totally respectable wine and beer offerings, great food, great atmosphere. We are tourists in Florida, sadly, but if we were local we'd be here often. Don't miss out.

I was road tripping with my friends heading home from key west and made a stop in saint Augustine. After finding this location on yelp we came in for lunch. The place looks a little off the beaten path and has a private parking lot in the back. There are multiple brightly colored rooms to choose to sit in and each room decorated with paintings from local artists. What can I say - lunch was fantastic. I ordered the wet burrito, which was the largest burrito I've ever seen. It was probably the size of 2-3 chipotle burritos and only $8. They had a nice selection of local craft beers and some from home (they had victory brews which I was surprised to find in Florida). We ordered the nachos for an appetizer, which were also delicious. My friend ordered the chocolate peanut butter and cookie dough cheesecake for dessert and it was essentially orgasmic. Will certainly be missing this place home in Philly - if you live close by, GO.

SERIOUS EATS! This is a hidden gem located in St. Augustine which offers what I would call Cal-Mex fare with a little southern influence. I have come here a few times with my sister (because she knows the best places in her town) and I have never been disappointed with the freshness of their ingredients and the flavor of their food. It's totally satisfying for the palate and the tummy! This restaurant is situated in a little converted house that serves up some BIG food with reasonable prices! The decor is cozy and colorful with divided dining areas for whatever fits your mood. Your plate is always served beautifully decorated with generous portions to boot. But wait to you taste it.... For starters, be careful as some of their appetizers are big enough for a meal (i.e. jerk chicken nachos ($9) corn tortilla chips piled high with melted cheese, black beans, marinated jerk chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and jalapenos topped with sour cream, green onions, and fresh cilantro served with a side of salsa add avocado $2. Leave room for your actual meal as they have an amazing menu that seems to change and evolve with the seasons. If you're a newbie, you really can't go wrong with their wet burrito ($7): black beans, brown rice, roasted red peppers, cheese, jalapenos, tomatoes and lettuce rolled in a flour tortilla, smothered in our red chili sauce topped with more cheese and baked. served with sour cream on the side add jerk chicken $2 or avocado $2 add shrimp or mahi $5 OR my personal favorite: avocado and roasted red pepper tacos or any of their tacos for that matter! Whatever you get to eat, they offer a nice selection of beer to wash it all down. And if you want to shine food altogether, they have a little space towards the back for the serious drinkers. But why on earth would you want to do that? AMAZING!

We visited St. Augustine for Easter Weekend and built the trip solely by Trip Advisor Reviews and this place was spot on. Not sure how long its been in the #3 or within the top ten spot but if it keeps this up , it will always stay on top. The guy that bought this place in 2011, Brian has quite a gem here. I wish him a lot of success. He bought this place apparently because years ago, there were never enough Coronas to go with his Happy Hour Tacos. He is big on service and availability of product and its evident here. The servers all work together and regardless of who's table it is, everyone is checking on the customers. Although its in a obscure, out of the way location in a residential area, it is well worth the visit. Someone complained about parking in a previous review, (there are two sides of the restaurant to park on from what I could see. Yes it is difficult to maneuver around but there was a parking lot across the street that did not have any signs for tow away zone or that it is private lot and we saw many people walk across the street from the restaurant before we parked. This is a small bungalow house. Great for families, dates, solo etc. I am not sure it could be romantic because the seating is all close to one another but if your a guy taking a girl or guy out for a date to a hip, fun atmosphere with good food and drinks then you will get kudos. The food and service is fantastic and on a trip to St. Augustine, should not be missed. Its a must to visit a small restaurant and support them instead of those commercial restaurants that seem to miss the small attention to details. We ordered jerk chicken nachos $9 corn tortilla chips piled high with melted cheese, black beans, marinated jerk chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and jalapenos. topped with sour cream, green onions, and fresh cilantro. served with a side of salsa. This was so full of flavor and spice. A definite must have. The Wet Burrito was HUGE AND DELICIOUS Cajun Mahi tacos served with a side of black beans and brown rice, topped with cheese, lettuce, cilantro white sauce, salsa and fresh cilantro. My daughter said were some of the best fish tacos that she has had in a long time. I had a shrimp curry dish that is not on the menu online. I cannot remember what it was but was amazing and spicy and so flavorful. Everything was moderately priced and great tasting. Be sure to visit this place and be sure to leave a review after because I would not have found this place if it wasn't for Trip Advisor and Yelp.

No funny business here. Great for lunch. Fresh food, good beer, and a casual, local atmosphere. Off the beaten path which weeds out most idiots who don't appreciate local and fresh. Jerk chicken nachos FTW!

Went shopping to at Augustine. Found this place on yelp. It was amazing. Th shrimp tacos and Cajun mahi tacos were the best ever. The salsa is very unique. The wet burrito is a must have. It is off the beaten path for sure but totally worth it!

It may take a bit of effort to find The Back 40 off Route 1 (NOT A1A) across the river from St. Augustine, but it is well worth the effort. The restaurant is small - maybe 16-20 tables - and the service is personal, but the food, oh the food. Everything is interesting and different, but more importantly, everything is home made from the salsa to the salad dressing and fresh, fresh, fresh. For that reason, expect to wait a little while as your food is made to order. We tried the jerk chicken press sandwich, the upside-down chicken pot pie and the jerk chicken salad. The portions were generous, the prices were reasonable (under $10 for most choices) and the food was delicious. Everything but the pot pie had just a little bit of heat. The daily specials (i.e., surf and turf burrito) and desserts (lemonade pie) were equally creative and there was a good selection of craft beers. The restaurant is housed in an authentic cracker cottage. The servers are friendly and efficient. It's kind of like eating at Aunt Martha's house, if Aunt Martha could cook. We went there with three older kids (16, 13, 12) and it was perfectly appropriate, but most of the customers were adults. This is probably not a good spot for smaller kids, but we all loved it. Good choices (based on black beans and rice) for vegetarians too.

Good but not as great as the ratings. Salsa is made on site and is very good (we make our own so not easy to please). Black beans and rice were good as was the Thai shrimp. Service was very attentive and friendly. Cool little off the beaten track place

Quite a find. Funky atmosphere but excellent food. We had the fish tacos and a curried shrimp salad, both tasty and satisfying. Same menu, and prices, for lunch and dinner. Service adequate and enthusiastic. Will definitely go back.

The party might be over at Back 40. I have been here many times and enjoyed the food, but today the food was downright poor. My last review gave this place 5 stars. The upside pot-pie, had clumps of salty spice mixture, it was way too salty. The chicken curry wrap tasted like cardboard, I mean it had no taste. The chicken was dry and tasteless, I didn't finish it. The fish tacos had small portions of bitter burnt fish. To top it off I've have bad gas all night. So although I've had many decent meals here in the past, and raved about Back 40 to my friends I'm afraid that is over. If one out of the three dishes was a little off I could understand, but all three is unacceptable. The restaurant had quite a few customers but it wasn't jam-packed. There is no excuse. It's a damn shame. I think some of the cooks are new, they usually make will make a mahi wrap upon request, but today we were told they don't know how. Think about that for a second, a cook that doesn't know how to make a wrap. So the restaurant is putting their trust in a cook that can't make a wrap. Someone might want to re-think this.

This is one of the reasons I love Yelp! I would have never found this place without this app. Had lunch here - wedge salad and the fish tacos ... they were pretty darn good! I love little places like this. So much character! I would pick a place like this over any "chain" restaurant any day.
